Methods for determining the spread of the sample include calculating the range and standard deviation for the data. The range is calculated by subtracting the lowest value from the highest value in the set. The standard deviation of the sample can be calculated using the formula:

Shape
The shape of the sample when displayed as a histogram or frequency distribution plot helps determine if the sample is normally distributed, symmetrical, or skewed (asymmetrical); the shape can also indicate the sample’s level of kurtosis. Kurtosis is a measure of whether the data are heavy-tailed (high number of outliers) or light-tailed (low number of outliers).
